BEAUTIFICATION
This committee is devoted to general improvements in and around the school. Past projects have included improving the garden at the front of the school, painting the benches and gazebos, and maintaining the upper sidewalk above the kindergarten area. The objective of the committee is simply to try to make the school a more beautiful place. Lot of volunteers and funds are needed.

DISASTER PREPAREDNESS
Students take part in fire and earthquake drills and learn the importance of being prepared, at school and at home, for a major disaster. The PTA maintains a disaster shed that holds a whole host of items, should a disaster occur while the children are at school.

ENRICHMENT CLASSES
Our school is pleased to inform families of a wide variety of afterschool enrichment classes for its students. Some past classes have included Chess, Marine Biology, Drama, Spanish, and Art. There are two to three sessions throughout the year. Sessions usually last between six and eight weeks. The cost is between $50 and $120 dollars per class. GRADE CHAIR REPRESENTATIVE
These positions start in 1st grade and continue until 6th grade. Each grade has one or two parents who are responsible for organizing volunteers to collect money from the science camp drive and numerous other school activities. In 5th and 6th grade, they must collect money for Science Camps. The 6th grade rep helps to organize end of year activities including graduation day, beach day and the play.

HOSPITALITY:
The Hospitality Committee host three luncheons a year for the teachers and staff: the day before school starts, a holiday luncheon in December, and an appreciation luncheon during Teacher Appreciation week. You may get a phone call or see a note in the school paper asking for help by bringing a dish to the luncheon. Many great cooks are needed! Hospitality also provides the snacks for the general PTA meetings.

KINDERGARTEN REPRESENTATIVE
The kindergarten rep. is a new position this year. This person will be responsible for keeping the kindergarten parents informed about what is going on around the rest of the school.

Vieja Valley's school colors are red and white. Fridays are designated as school spirit day and students are asked to wear red & white or a Vieja Valley shirt. Please support your PTA by purchasing Vieja Valley logo apparel, which can be found on our website.

The Vieja Valley Elementary PTA is a very active and an integral part of the school. We sponsor many fun activities and wonderful programs for our children. It is through the incredible energy of you, our volunteers that we can make this happen. Everyone is encouraged to join the PTA during our membership drive in September. RAPTOR READER
This is a book club for grades K - 1. Children are given a book to read nightly at their reading level. PTA provides the books and the teachers organize this program. RED RIBBON WEEK:
This is a one-week long campaign to encourage kids to stay alcohol, tobacco, and drug free. Children are encouraged to pledge to stay drug free. There is also a poster contest for students. Winners may be eligible to be part of a community-wide calendar and may win savings bonds and over great prizes.

ROOM PARENT COORDINATOR
The room parent coordinator maintains communication between the room parents throughout the school. The person coordinates all school wide events and sends out notices to inform room parents of special events. The person also helps remind all school volunteers to keep track of the hours that they spend in conjunction with Vieja Valley. It is important to track the volunteer hours that you spend at school so that our PTA remains in compliance of the non-profit rules. As a non-profit entity, the PTA must show that we have logged an adequate number of volunteer hours. At the close of each school year, the PTA files a report with the State PTA. SAFETY
The safety committee helps the crossing guards, especially at the beginning of the year, in making sure everyone knows the procedures for biking/scootering to school (wear helmets, walk bikes across crosswalks, etc.)He/she also keeps track of any safety issues off-campus (for example: communicate with bike clubs not to have group rides by school during 8:00-8:30 AM, etc.). This position also arranges for volunteer crossing guards in front of school during parent-teacher conference week.

SCHOOL DIRECTORY
At the beginning of each school year, this committee requests information from each parent. The information is then compiled and published in our Vieja Valley phone and email directory. If you wish to advertise in the directory or know someone else who would like to advertise, please contact the committee chair. Business contributions pay for the printing of the directories.

YEAR BOOK
In May and June, you can buy a Vieja Valley yearbook. Throughout the year, photos are collected to be used in the book. If you want to contribute photos to the yearbook, put them in the yearbook box that is located in the office or contact the yearbook committee chair.
